ISO 15434 Special Character Support

If you are a printer manufacturer or software developer and would like to include your specific programming information about these special characters, please contact Tina Barkan or Craig Harmon

From EIA
ISO 15434 employs as a header the three character sequence [)>. ISO 15434 further employs the following special characters as separators and terminators: <GS>, <FS>, <RS>, <US>, <EOT>. These characters may be difficult to implement without specific knowledge of the programming language and character set employed.
Information and guidance on the use of ISO 15434 special characters can be found by contacting specific printer or software manufacturers or by referring to this Internet website.

Intermec Printers:
The following is from "IPL PROGRAMMING REFERENCE MANUAL" chapter 7, page 17. This manual is available to download from INTERMEC.COM in the manuals section.
Section Title: Data Shift - International Characters
Purpose: Allows you to enter command characters as data.
Syntax:
Notes: In Emulation mode, this command shifts the next character (if not a control character) into the upper character bank (setting the eighth bit to 1) to print international characters. This command lets you enter command characters as data instead of commands in both Advanced and Emulation mode. For example, use this command to enter a <GS> or <CR> as data in a bar code or text field.
Zebra Printers
The Zebra Printer Language (ZPLII) employs a Field HEX command, which is ^FH. This can be placed before any of our data fields to encode any ASCII character by using its HEX equivalent. The ZPLII manual describing this command can be found on Zebra's website in the downloads area. The information about the Field HEX command is on page 218 of the printed manual or on page 227 of the Adobe Acrobat file.
